The Boyne Foundation is hoping to replace an obelisk built in 1736 on the banks of the River Boyne to commemorate King William of Orange's victory of King James. At one hundred and thirty feet the monument was the tallest man-made structure in the country at the time, but it was destroyed during the Irish Civil War in 1923. Now the Foundation, working with Co-Operation Ireland, has bought land beside the Boyne Visitor Centre and hopes to build a replica obelisk as well as installing a picnic and barbeque area. Boyne Obelisk LOL 1690 was raised on the 30th May 2009 on the Green Grassy Slopes of the Boyne. LOL 1952 are heavily involved with this project.
